Day 6- Caherdaniel to Sneem
I know it’s Barbs turn for the cover photo but she was pretty proud of this photo she took of me today and it is a gooder so I promise you will see Barbs face at the helm tomorrow!
The air bnb last night had the best views of anything to date and the room was pretty nice too. We were 4 km from the Blind piper so initially we had a bit of a crank on but Clare picked us up at the pub at 7pm and after the night of trad music on Friday it was as the probably all for the best. Here are the views looking out back at the sheep and looking through the lounge windows out to the sea from this air bnb.
Today was our 6th day on the trail and we both agreed was our lightest. It was a lot of hills to climb but beautiful views made it all good. About 1/3 of the way along a country road Chaimous pulled up in a small white van with his dog Sandee on the passenger floor.
He was so sweet and insisted that we veer off the trail just ahead before the bridge to walk 20 minutes up the mountain to see the most impressive fort in all of Ireland. Barb was not havin it at first but after meeting him again right at the bridge where he was visiting w another local we were kind of pressured into the excursion. So up the track to the left we started. You have to understand he had the sweetest way about him. He then caught up to us again and suggested that after the fort we come down a bit and at the first inhabitable house on the left we turn off and cut through his land w many directions about gates and tracks and corrals and grassy paths left here right there and we would connect back to the Kerry way (shortcut - oh yes). It took quite a bit of convincing w Barb and I left some key details out but she did agree that it would cut our backtracking and it was worth a try. It was so beautiful up on top of his sheep range and was truly the highlight of our day! The fort was great too! Shout out to Chaimous and so sad we didn’t catch a photo w you- loved meeting you
After hooking back up to the Kerry Way and several km later we met another interesting character that Barb did get a photo of.
So neither Barb or I are super huge on planning ahead and we enjoy food but do not always think about it ahead of time. So we never did order a pack lunch and had gotten 5 days out of a package of aged cheddar slices and some rye crackers and kind bars. We realized at breakfast at our air bnb we were pretty lean on lunch supplies. Actually we had nothing but water and Barb had an apple in her pack from 5 days before. So at breakfast we slid the toast (neither of us usually eat the toast) into a ziplock bag and I made sure to butter mine. Low and behold by 130 we did get a bit hungry and Barb delighted in getting this photo of me enjoying my butter sandwhich.
