Monday June 17 Kinsale
The photos below are of Charles Fort, near my air bnb. It was a 45 minute walk to town - past two pubs and a very cute residential area with narrow windy streets along the sea wall.
From Charles Fort
Looking towards Kinsale.
One of the pubs on my walk to Kinsale.
The battle of Kinsale in 1601 was the most historic battle in this area when Ireland and Spain joined forces against the British.
3 photos above are of Fishy fishy restaurant. I was instructed to visit here by quite a few people. Great branding - service was so so and food was great.
This bar has the best sea food chowder I’ve tasted - period. They also have live trad music every night. I met Rose and Jim here last night up at the bar and Rose and I hit it off - they dropped me home on their way home a bit too early for my liking but it was sweet of them to offer, so I accepted.
I’ll head back there tonight for dinner and music for
my last night in Ireland.
Below is a photo of the west side of my great grandfathers stable at Heathburn Hall. If I had walked down to the end of it there is an inner courtyard. Anto and I worked that out on google maps photo view this morning. I met the two sons today of the lady who owns it- Aaron and Roy. They actually had to pull me out w their vehicle as the front of my rental was high centered on a bank when I was turning around after I saw the Heathburn hall sign. I was so flustered I left without even knowing their names so I went back to Kinsale…licked my wounds and thought well if I was in Canada I would buy them a bottle and a Ty card. So after having a ft visit w Nik and Stetley and glimpses of Annie, I was all refreshed. So headed back into Kinsale and bought 2 bottles of Jameson at 1601… the local liquor store. Then off to Heathburn Hall I went again. Aaron was very happy to see me (my version) and gratefully accepted the bottles and cards. I don’t think the bros get on too well so he apologized for not being able to show me the house as his mom and his older brother Roy live there but she is not well. He said that ggf Shaw built the home he lives in apparently for his daughter as she was going to move away but he didn’t want her too. I’m not sure if that was Beryl or Frithas grandmother. Anyway I was not able to go up to Heathburn Hall as their mother is not well and the brother was away at the vets w a horse.
Lots to still discover. We have found FRITHA who is another ggd from gf Shaws first wife and she happens to be visiting London this week so on Wednesday her and her husband are coming to Cleo and Antos for lunch!
GGF Shaws old stable at the back of the property- this portion of the property is now owned by the Batemans
Heathburn hall propert was comprised of 500 acres when gf Shaw owned it.
The pub in Belgooly where I am writing this post from. Very likely ggf Shaw sat here in the same barstool in his day. It is less than 6 km from Heathburn Hall.
