Haast to Lake Wanaka

We stayed at the backpackers dorm at Haast, and were up and out early to avoid the sand flies and get a jump on the drive through the pass to Lake Wanaka.  What a beautiful drive.  Sorry no photos of the drive.

After further reflection I have to better describe this Big Fig culinary delight.  Inside is a buffet of slow cooked meats and veggies and then a number of beautiful healthy complex salads that would knock your socks off.  The large plate at $30 allowed 6 entries and the med plate 4 and the small 3.  They served your choices up behind the glass.   I had the beef cheeks (just like beef brisket) with roast potatoes (of course Carol!) and roast carrots w Tarragon and a shaved brocolli salad that was divine, and a kale quinoa salad w many ingredients and then another mixed bean salad. Whoaza!  I’m not needing dinner now.  Oh yes and pomegranate sangria x2.  They were busy every time we walked past.  Seating mostly outside w a few tables inside.  Very rustic but homey.  A great idea I thought for a more informal long table dinner type of set up.

The Top 10 campsite in Wanaka had no vacancy but we were able to grab a tent site at another park just down the road.  As our legs were weary from the day before, we took it easy, and booked some tours at the info centre, enjoyed the best lunch ever at the Big Fig and walked along the beach to the Wanaka tree.  The town was so lovely and the largest we had visited since leaving Christchurch.

The beach walk had these history plaques all along it for every year dating back to the late 1700s.  It really struck my fancy.

In the evening we returned to the beach strip for dinner and The Water Bar served up some scrumptious calamari.  Hafeeza also ordered cauliflower bites x2 as they were so good and a bottle of local Sauvignon Blanc for our last night together.

Of course Abdullah scouted out the pool table and dragged us to the back to play a few rounds.  He actually made this shot below!  He’s quite taken w the game and it was fun to watch him improve each night.

We headed home to the campsite at 1030 but they had the gate locked on us so we had to park on the road and walk in.  We felt like rebels.
